Christian brothers and sisters competing for someone in authority's attention, vying for a parent's love, betraying trust for profit, seeking revenge, hating one another because of sibling rivalry or stolen blessings, killing someone to place one's self in a better position, having differences of opinions, jealousy, envy, strife, and other evil works did not begin in America. Nations have risen up in war against each other and shed innocent blood since the beginning of time.
Genesis 4, God shows no regard for Cain or his offering so Cain slays Abel because God looked with favor upon his younger brother Abel's offering.
Genesis 27 Jacob under the instruction of their mother steals the blessing of their Father Isaac from Esau. This treacherous act caused Esau to want to kill Jacob.
Genesis 37 Joseph's brothers hated him because their Father loved Joseph more than the others. Israel aka Jacob gifted Joseph alone with a coat of many colors. The brothers' hated caused them to want to kill Joseph. All the brother decided to throw him into a pit. Ruben left and while he was gone the other brothers conspired and decided to sell their 17 year old brothers to a company of Ishmeelites (Midianite merchantmen) for a profit of 20 pieces of silver. Afterward they took Joseph's coat of many color and dipped in the blood of a goat. They all agreed to lie to their father about their evil deed. Their hatred caused great grief to overcome their father and years of suffering for Joseph.
Leviticus 19:17-18 KJV
17Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. 18Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Proverbs 10: 18 KJV
He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.
Proverbs 26:24- 28 KJV
24He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;
25When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
27Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
What can we hate? Sin, wickedness, evil, and what is wrong, are things the Word of God says we can hate. Scriptural readings: Psalm 45:7, Psalm 97:10-11, Amos 5, and Romans 12
Note: Willful sin causes unrepentance of unclean, ungodly lifestyles, 2 Corinthians 12: 20-21
Why should we hate unrighteous and ungodly living? Romans 1:18-32 state because "Man's desire for unrighteous and ungodly living will cause him to become a hater of God."
