Unity and Harmony

Expecting Unity and Harmony in religious circles is similar to asking for World Peace. The expression, "Why can't we all just get along?" comes to mind. During the year 2020, our differences and inability to come into an agreement have brought to light the consequences of lack of unity. The world has suffered great heartache, suffering, and loss. Religions are experiencing divisions. Church members are debating on topics like fear versus faith regarding Covid19, whether to wear a mask and social distance or not, political affiliations, systemic racism, gun control, policing of our communities, alternative lifestyle tolerances in ministry positions, abortion, and the woman's right to choose, how involved to become with mental health issues of members, domestic abuse intervention, service programs to cut, Hell or Heaven as the final destination for those who committed suicide, the Holy Spirit, and many more topics. Is it impossible for Christians to be like-minded or become one in Spirit, in Faith, and in God? Are we beyond obeying God's commands, statutes, and judgment?

2 Corinthians speaks of Christians working together and not being in agreement with unrighteousness, darkness, idols or the evil works of Satan. What happened to The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might? Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Psalm 133:1 God wanted unity among the brethren and sisters.

Zechariah 6 speaks of building the temple together. The ideal setting is living and working in harmony with one another.

Ephesians 4 speaks of how Christians are to have unity in the faith and with diligence preserve the unity of Spirit through the bond of peace. It is not always easy to walk together and agree. Colossians 4 speaks of Christian virtues and the perfect bond of unity. Amos 3:3 asks the question, "Can two walk together and not agree on where they are going?" In conflict management courses, students are taught to bridge the gap, bring both sides together, and find a common meeting place. There are moments in time when the process is taking much longer than anticipated and the end conclusion is too often let’s agree to disagree.

Note: John 17 Jesus addresses how the world will view Him and his followers; unity and love are examples the world should see among the believers.
